Cat. #0004571: ALBERT BASSERMANN

Scarce vintage 3.3 x 5.3-inch matte-finish black and white portrait by Studio D’Or, boldly signed across the bottom border in black fountain pen in the late 1920s. In good condition. Veteran German stage and screen star Albert Basserman, who was so memorable in European silent gems like Der Letzte Tag (1913), Lucrezia Borgia (1922) and Christoph Columbus (1923), transitioned into character roles in the United States with the advent of talkies. He was Oscar-nominated for his portrayal of the kidnapped diplomat Van Meer in Alfred Hitchcock's Foreign Correspondent (1940), in which he performed all of his dialog phonetically, due to speaking no English, and was elsewhere terrific in Dreyfus (1930), Desperate Journey (1942), The Moon and Sixpence (1942), Since You Went Away (1944), Rhapsody in Blue (1945), The Private Affairs of Bel Ami  (1947), and The Red Shoes (1948).
